Firstly, lets create our background. Create a new layer, name it background. on this layer place a circular gradient with these colors: #2052af and #3260b7. Then go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise and apply a 2% Noise filter, Gaussian and Monochromatic.
Now we're going to create the base of our book. Create a new layer and name it book. Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), make sure the mode is set to Paths and the Radius is set to 15 px.
Now go to Edit>Transform Path>Warp and warp your path so that it looks similar to the image below.
Select the pen tool (P) and right click the path and go to Make Selection. Now select the gradient tool and use a liner gradient with colors #a26216 and #8b520f to fill the book selection.
Create a new folder and Name it Right Pages, create a New Layer within the 'Right Pages' folder and name it Page 1. Select the Pen Tool (P) and create a path similar to below.
Right Click the Path (make sure you've still got the Pen Tool selected (P)) and click Make Selection, fill the selection with a linear gradient (G) #f7f4f0 and #faf3ea.
Now Right Click your Page 1 Layer and go to Blending Options, apply the following drop shadow: Opacity: 49%, Distance 5px, Spread 10 % an Size 16px. Hit Ok.
Now right click on the Page 1 layer and click 'Copy Layer Style'. We'll be using the shadow effect on all the pages so it's easier to copy and paste instead of manually doing it every time.
Now we're going to repeat the steps we used to create the page on another layer named Page 2. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create your path, Right Click it and select 'Make Selection', fill the selection with a linear gradient (G) #f7f4f0 and #faf3ea. Right Click the 'Page 2' layer and go to 'Paste Layer Style'.
Repeat for as many pages as you like, I created 6 pages.
Now create a New folder and Name it Left Pages. Follow the same steps to create the pages on the left hand side, remembering to Right click each page layer and selecting 'Paste Layer Style' to keep the shadow on the books
Now we're almost done! Right Click the Book layer and select 'Duplicate Layer'. Name this layer Shadow and place it below the Book layer. Right Click the Shadow layer, Click Blending Options>Color Overlay and Pick the color black. Now, with the 'Shadow' layer selected, Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and apply a 15px blur, next go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur and apply a blur with Angle 0, Distance 200px.
Now we'll grab the Dodge Tool, Use a 200px soft brush with Exposure set to 20% and lightly brush the inside of the topmost pages in our book, this will just give the image a little bit more depth.
Finally, Apply a Curves Layer by going to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Curves and set them like the image below.
And there you have it! Your Open Book Icon is Finished! If you got lost at any point during these steps, or simply want the .psd from this tutorial, you can download it below.
